Traveling to and within Papua New Guinea is expensive, very expensive. I decided not to follow a group tour, nor any organized package tour but instead completely alone, independent and therefor much more flexible. With the PNG 2005 Edition by Lonely Planet inside my backpack, I saved a lot of money thanks to the advice and tips I found inside.
Papua New Guinea shares the island with the Indonesian province of West Papua. Apart from that, numerous islands and atolls in the Coral sea are part of this tropical paradise. In the territorial waters north of PNG as Papua New Guinea is often reffered too, spectacular coral reefs are home to the world's most amazing marine life. The north coast as well as the smaller islands as the Bismarck Archipelago, The Solomons, New Ireland and New Britain attracts divers from around the world. PNG boast the second biggest rainforest after the Amazon filled wth the most spectacular and gorgeous wildlife. All of the known species of birds of paradise are present here. The country offers great hiking and trekking between an impressive array of orchids and other flora as well.
For the cultured traveler PNG must be the absolute top that our planet has to offer. With more then 820 indigenous languages spoken between 5,800,000 inhabitants who lives in clans scattered throughout the highlands, one can visit remote areas such as Tari, the Sepik region or the Trobriand Islands for an cultural encounter, nowhere else to find on the globe.
This year, in 2007 some 300 visitors from around the world were so lucky to attend one of the biggest and most colourful events in the world... The annual Mount Hagen show. I was so fortunate to be one of them. In the next galleries I try to express by the way of images what PNG is look like.
